How to Remove Stickers and Labels Without Sticky Residue (3 Easy Ways)

remove sticker residue easily

Why Peeling Stickers is So Annoying

You buy a new glass jar or container, but the label won’t come off cleanly. Instead of scratching at it with your nails (and leaving that gross sticky glue behind), try these effortless methods using things you already have at home.

Method 1: Hot Water + Dish Soap (Best for Glass & Ceramic)

  1. Fill a bowl with hot water (not boiling, but very warm).
  2. Add a few drops of dish soap and submerge the sticky item for 10 minutes.
  3. Peel the label off — it should slide right off. If residue remains, scrub gently with a sponge.

Why It Works: Heat softens the adhesive, and soap breaks down the glue.

Method 2: Baking Soda + Oil (For Plastic & Metal)

  1. Mix 1 tbsp baking soda + 1 tbsp cooking oil (vegetable, olive, or coconut).
  2. Rub the paste onto the sticky residue and let it sit for 5 minutes.
  3. Wipe away with a cloth or paper towel.

Bonus: This also works for removing price tags from books and DVDs!

Method 3: Hair Dryer Trick (For Stubborn Labels)

  1. Heat the sticker with a hair dryer on medium heat for 30 seconds.
  2. Slowly peel from one corner while keeping the heat on.
  3. If glue remains, use a bit of rubbing alcohol on a cotton pad.

Warning: Don’t use this on thin plastic (it can warp).

What NOT to Do

❌ Don’t use sharp knives — they scratch surfaces.
❌ Avoid nail polish remover (acetone) on painted or delicate items — it can strip finishes.
❌ Never soak wooden items — they can swell or warp.
